Now that principal construction has concluded on the Nebraska City Veterans Memorial Building Project (NCVMBP), the project board of directors have turned their attention to building maintenance and facility rentals.
Jim Kuhn, president of the NCVMBP, visited the Nebraska City Rotary Club on Oct. 23 to discuss what the board has planned for the building’s future.
Recently, the building has hosted a variety of Nebraska City Creative District (NCCD) events, said Kuhn, including the second NCCD Art Walk (250 people), Jazz Night in Nebraska City (200 people), and the Hispanic Heritage Festival (250 people). The NCCD Bluegrass Festival attracted 500 people to the building’s parking lot earlier in the summer, said Kuhn.
Other events that have taken place in the Nebraska City Veterans Memorial Building include a Leadership Nebraska City torch passing ceremony, graduation parties, and Nebraska City Dance Studio recitals.
Next month, the building will host a free performance of “Not Too Far Distant,” an original play by Becky Boesen and commissioned by History Nebraska. It is based on the World War II letters of Army medic Clarence Williams. The play will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22.
Kuhn said approximately $3.8 million has gone into the renovation and upgrades to the building, and those funds have been obtained through grants and donations.
