A variety of celebrations and observances are planned in the coming days in Nebraska City to honor the community’s veterans.
Mayor Bryan Bequette, joined by veterans from the audience at the Monday, Nov. 4, Nebraska City City Council meeting, proclaimed Monday, Nov. 11, as Veterans Day in Nebraska City.
Tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 9), the Nebraska City Veterans Memorial Building, 810 1st Corso, will be the site of two special events, a veterans breakfast from 7:30 to 11 a.m., and presentations of Quilts of Valor to area veterans at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Blue Star Mothers of Nebraska Chapter 1 of Nebraska City will present the quilts.
Nebraska City Public Schools
Nebraska City Public Schools will honor, recognize, and celebrate veterans across the district over the next week. We welcome the community to join us on the following dates and times.
Northside and Hayward Elementary: Teachers will incorporate Veterans Day into their classroom lessons at each grade level.
Nebraska City Middle School (NCMS): On Saturday, Nov. 9, from 7:30 to 11 a.m., the National Junior Honor Society will serve a Veterans Breakfast at the Nebraska City Veterans Memorial Building, 810 1st Corso.
On Monday, Nov. 11, at 9 a.m., NCMS will host a Veterans Day program in the NCMS gym, 910 1st Corso, where the 8th-grade band will perform. The program will last approximately 25 minutes.
Nebraska City High School (NCHS): On Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. NCHS will host a Veterans Day program in the gym, where the band will perform. Mayor Bryan Bequette will be the honored speaker. The program will last approximately 25 minutes.
Nebraska City Public Schools extends heartfelt gratitude to all veterans and active service members for their dedication and service to our country.
Lourdes Central Catholic
Students at Lourdes Central Catholic will take part in two Veterans Day-related events, said Fr. Jonathan Haschke, chief administrative officer of Lourdes Central Catholic.
The first is the preparation of cards and gift packages that will be sent to Nebraska service members who are stationed overseas, with plans to mail them in November so they arrive before Christmas.
Lourdes Central Catholic High School students will attend the Friday, Nov. 22, production at the Nebraska City Veterans Memorial Building of “Not Too Far Distant,” a play about a soldier from Nebraska who fights in World War II.
Admission to the play is free to all Nebraska City residents, and the performance begins at 7 p.m.
