Chief David Lacy of the Nebraska City Police Department was the guest reader Feb. 6 for Citizen’s EDGE at Hayward Elementary. Chief Lacy read “Before She Was Harriet” by Lesa Cline-Ransome, a story about Harriet Tubman, to Hayward’s third-grade students. Students also had an opportunity to learn about bravery and the NCPD during Lacy’s visit. Citizen’s EDGE visits Hayward once per quarter. The program began in September 2019 with a presentation on Johnny Appleseed by John Crook, and it gives citizens in the community a chance to introduce students to historical figures. Students have the opportunity to learn that the community cares about them and, in turn, they begin to care more about their community, according to Stacie Higgins, EDGE coordinator. Classroom Super Citizens, from left, Teresa Albers, Sue Little, Susan Miyoshi, Elaine Golden, and Debbie Salansky held up copies of “Before She Was Harriet” so students could better see the illustrations during Lacy’s reading.
