The Lourdes Central Knights made their path to Centennial for the Class C2-3 District final where they will face Grand Island Central Catholic on Saturday, November 2.
Lourdes took down Elmwood-Murdock on Tuesday, October 29, in four sets to win the Sub-District title.
In the first set, the Knights played fast and aggressive and took a 10-2 lead. Elaina Madison and Ivye Meyer scored back-to-back kills, along with a kill from Ainsley Esser.
Leading 15-7, Ivye Meyer scored three consecutive ace serves followed by a kill from Aspen Myer. Addie DeFreece added a kill that made the score, 23-14, in favor of Lourdes. After two hitting errors from Elmwood, Lourdes took the first set 25-14.
Lourdes trailed most of the second set. With Elmwood leading, 21-20, Gina McGowen scored a block, but Elmwood went on to win the second set, 25-23.
In the third set, both teams battled back-and-forth until Lourdes pulled away at the end. McGowen tied the game at 21-21 after a block. Lourdes grabbed the lead when Elmwood had two consecutive hitting errors, and Lourdes snagged the third set, 25-21.
Lourdes and Elmwood were tied 5-5 in the fourth set. Lourdes busted the game open and scored seven straight points.
Madison had three kills, Addie DeFreece scored a kill, Ivey Meyer added a kill and Aspen Meyer contributed two ace serves, as Lourdes carried a 12-5 lead.
Leading 20-9, Esser expanded the lead after a kill, and Lourdes were four points away from advancing to the district final.
Lourdes had a 24-11 advantage during the fourth set. With the game point on the line, Elmwood served the ball to Emma Heng, who hit it to Ivye Meyer, who then set it up to McGowen for the kill, and the Knights went on to win, 25-11.
“I told the girls to use their warm-ups to get rid of the bad stuff so we could come out strong and ready to play,” Coach Kylie Hein said.
Lourdes battled back in the third set and was able to stop Elmwood from finding holes to score points. “We adjusted our rotation just a little bit,” Coach Hein said. “It gave us a little bit better match-up offensively and defensively. We talked about taking care of our side of the net and adjusting our feet and that helped out a lot.”
On Monday, October 8, the Lourdes Central Knights defeated Cornerstone Christian in the first round of subdistricts, 25-12, 25-9, 25-14.
