NEVADA - Two goals in a five-minute stretch in the second half secured Nevada’s 3-1 victory over Waverly-Shell Rock in boys’ soccer on a cold and windy Friday evening at the SCORE Athletic Complex in Nevada.
Nevada forward Jose Buenrrostro scored both Nevada goals in the second half to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead. Waverly-Shell Rock answered three minutes later, but the Nevada defense stood tall down the stretch to close out the win.
Buenrrostro’s first goal came during the 52-minute, 47-second mark of the game. He got a feed from Henry Nelson, made a great turn and drilled the ball into the net.
“I was actually expecting it not to go in,” Buenrrostro said. “But it went in and it felt great.”
The Cubs made another run toward the Go-Hawk goal five minutes later. At the 57:28 mark, Waverly-Shell Rock was called for a penalty in the box, giving Nevada a penalty kick.
Buenrrostro took the kick and punched it past Go-Hawk keeper John Steffen for a 3-0 Nevada lead.
“That was really big,” Buenrrostro said.
Anthony Ellis scored Nevada’s first goal off an assist from Devin See a little over five minutes into the first half. The defense held strong the rest of the half, despite good pressure from Waverly-Shell Rock, to allow Buenrrostro to break the game open in the second half.
Waverly-Shell Rock quickly responded to Buenrrostro’s two goals in the second half. With 19:49 left in regulation, Soren Beckstrom found the net to get the Go-Hawks back in the game.
The strong winds made things interesting for the Nevada defense down the stretch. But the Cubs didn’t break.
“We’ve just got to realize the wind is going to take the ball wherever it’s going to go and account for that,” Nevada sweeper Jack Cahill said. “I thought (the defense) played great. We were all composed and everything.”
Despite battling the poor weather conditions, Cahill said his team played a lot more together and executed better than three nights before when Prairie City-Monroe handed the Cubs a 2-1 setback at Monroe.
“We learned to take better touches,” Cahill said, “just keep the ball moving and keep the ball on the ground more.”
Nevada improved to 2-2 with the victory. Waverly-Shell Rock dropped to 2-5.
