Six Pioneers will make trip to individual state

The Nebraska City wrestling team picked up a seventh place team finish in a field of 12 teams at the Class B-1 district meet at Platteview on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8 and 9.

Six individual Nebraska City wrestlers qualified for the state tournament with top four finishes for their particular weight brackets.

Looking at the team scores, Blair won the district title. Other teams in order were Columbus Lakeview, Plattsmouth, Omaha Skutt, Ralston, Seward and Nebraska City. Rounding out the standings were Beatrice, Bennington, West Point-Beemer, Platteview and Omaha Roncalli.

Chris Adams, 145, was the lone district champ for the Nebraska City squad. He won a tourney opening match in a 10 second pin against Platteview and followed that with another win by pin against Beatrice. A decision victory over Connor Drahota of Skutt Catholic propelled Adams to the finals where to beat Boston Barcel of Columbus Lakeview, also by decision.

Scoring third place finishes for the Pioneers were Hayden Schalk, 106; and Jordan Moyer, 160. Fourth place finishes were recorded by Reid Stracke, 113; Jorge Loarca, 120; and Josh DeLunger, 132.

Action now moves to the CHI Health Center, formerly CenturyLink Center, in Omaha for the individual state tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-16.

Classes B and C will wrestle in the second session at 4 p.m. on Thursday for first and second round championship action.

132—Josh DeLunger (B1 4th), 23-12 vs. Izaak Hunsley (B3 1st), Hastings, 39-6

145—Chris Adams (B1 1st), 33-2 vs. Brody Raines (B4 4th), Sidney, 41-9

160—Jordan Moyer (B1 3rd), 36-9 vs. Caden Yrkoski (B2 2nd), Schuyler, 28-5

Winners of the first two rounds will advance to the semifinals. Losers of either of the first two round matches will wrestle back on Friday in the hopes of reaching the medal rounds.

Wrestle backs for Class B and C will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. The first round of wrestle backs feature those wrestlers who lost in the first round of the championship bracket. The second round of wrestle backs will feature the first round wrestle back winners and the second round of championship bracket losers.

Winners of the second round wrestle backs and semifinal wrestlers will compete in the feature session of wrestling on Friday night as all classes will be on the mats at 5 p.m.

Third round wrestle back winners will advance to the medal rounds, which begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Those who fall in the championship semifinals will have the chance to wrestle back for a medal during that 8:30 a.m. session.

The championship finals featuring Friday night's semifinal winners will be carried on NET (Nebraska Public Television) at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
