Nebraska City lost to Omaha Mercy on senior night for the Pioneer volleyball team on Thursday, Oct 12. Scorers were 25-11, 25-13 and 25-11.
Although the score went against the Pioneer team, Thursday was about more than just one volleyball match.
It was about honoring a loyal and committed teammate.
Becky Lant was the only senior on this squad. And she hasn’t been able to play due injury.
Coach Jordan Broady explained how great of a person and team member Lant has been this year.
Instead of being negative about losing her final year of high school volleyball to injury, Lant showed up to practices. She was present for her teammates and offered advice.
“She’s been a huge support for us.”  Broady said.
The coach pointed out that it’s not everyday you see seniors teaching and interacting with freshmen. Lant did that this year and showed great character.
The coach acknowleged that not being able to play the sport you love as a senior year had to be difficult. But it was something that Lant knew had happen.
“It wasn’t a shock because I knew what was coming.”  Lant said.
Lant said the team has been protective of her and makes sure she is safe.
“The team is really understanding and are always there for me,” Lant said.
Nebraska City volleyball will be at home Tuesday, Oct. 17 to face Blair.
