Steven Paul Vampola, 73, of Lincoln, passed away on  Nov. 20, 2018, at home. Steve was born in Lincoln on May 24, 1945, to George F. & Lillian A. (Havelka) Vampola and was united in marriage to Judy E. Luff on Feb. 28, 1970, in the Unadilla Christian Church.
Steve attended Pius X High School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1964 before joining the military.
He entered the Navy and went to active duty from 1964 – 1966 on the USS Canberra (CAG-2) out of San Diego, Calif.
Steve did two tours of duty off of Vietnam.   Following his time in the Navy, Steve joined the Nebraska Air National Guard.
After his military service, he began working in Lincoln at Lincoln Telephone Company and retired in 1998. Steve was also a member of the Unadilla Christian Church and a life member of VFW Post 3606 where he once served as Post Commander.
Steve had a sense of humor that couldn’t be contained.  He couldn’t wait to walk in the door at a family gathering and tell a new joke. He’d follow that up by handing out a shiny new quarter to the kids or chocolate coin dollars. Steve was in his element playing the role of Santa after the Christmas Eve service at church for many years and a few times at the nursing home where his father resided.
He also loved movies; Zorro, old westerns, and James Bond were some of his favorites.
Steve was always a fighter; he was born at only 3 and a half pounds and battled cancer in the last year of his life.
Steve strived to see the cup half full and he felt daily blessed by his earth angels (as he referred to them) at the SE Cancer Center.
Steve is survived by his beloved dog; Missy, brother-in-law/sister-in-law; Dean (Peggy) Luff – Unadilla, sister-in-law/brother-in-law; Joyce (Gary) King – Bennet, nephews, nieces, and special friends; who looked after him this past year.
He was preceded in death by his wife; Judy, infant daughter; Vanessa, parents; George & Lillian, brothers; Roy, Roger, and Gary, and sister-in-law; Linda O’Neel.
Visitation was to be 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Saturday with family present from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home (4040 A Street). Funeral services were to be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Unadilla Christian Church. Memorials to the Unadilla Christian Church or VFW Post 3606 in Lincoln.  Pastor Sandy Denton was to be officiating. Burial with military honors was to follow in the Unadilla Cemetery. Condolences: www. bmlfh.com
