Verla Kathleen Mullis, age 93 of Surprise, Ariz., died June 14, 2018, at Grandview Care Center in Sun City West, Ariz.  
Kathleen was born May 16, 1925, Eunice Kathryn Ferguson and Ivan Julian Balfour, in Omaha and was raised on her parents 200-acre farm near the community of Union.  
She attended a country school near the old town of Factoryville and later high school in Union, graduating in 1942 as salutatorian.  
Kathleen lived many years in California and was extremely involved in her children’s activities and community affairs.  
Kathleen was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Beta Sigma Phi, United Commercial Travelers(UCT) a fraternal organization rising to Supreme Counselor, and Covina Woman’s Club.
Her retirement years were spent in Surprise where she pursued her antique business and supported as a volunteer for many years the spring training schedules of major league baseball in Peoria and Surprise.
Throughout these years she participated in numerous fund-raising events for cancer and the Special Olympics and gave financial and material support to local charities and battered women groups.  
Survivors include her sons, Alan J. Mullis and Paul C. Mullis, Jr.; and daughter, Cathy J. Mullis Howery; grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 2, at Cowles Hill Cemetery near Nebraska City.  There will be no visitations and the casket will remain closed. A memorial fund has been established.
