Merlyn Frederick Holtgrewe, age 89 of Talmage died June 18, 2018 at Nebraska City Care and Rehabilitation Center.  
Merlyn was born Dec. 13, 1928 at his lifelong home near Talmage, the son of Henry and Laura (Ruenholl) Holtgrewe.  
He attended Lorton Public School and Talmage Public School and graduated in 1945.  Merlyn married Alida Gadeken Aug. 5, 1948. Alida died Dec. 6, 2012.  
Merlyn farmed in the Talmage area most of his life until his retirement.
Merlyn served on the St. John’s United Church of Christ Board and the cemetery board.  
He also served on the Talmage Public Schools board where he helped expand the district.  In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing.  
Over the years, Alida and Merlyn loved to play cards and travel around the United States and occasionally Canada and Mexico.
Merlyn was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Allen and brother in law, Arnold Griepenstroh.  Survivors include his son, James Holtgrewe and wife Barbara of Marquette; grandson, James Holtgrewe, Jr. and wife Megan of Grand Island; sister, Delphine Griepenstroh of Nebraska City; nephew, Dean Griepenstroh and wife Sue of Dunbar; niece, Mary Loftis and husband Steve of Craig; many grand nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were to be 11 a.m. Friday, June 22, at St. John’s (McWilliams) United Church of Christ near Talmage with burial in the St. John’s Cemetery.
Visitations were to be 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Marshall Funeral Chapel in Nebraska City with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
