Josephine Smith, age 94, of Nebraska City, formerly of Hamburg, passed away early Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017, at Morton Place in Nebraska City.


Josephine was born on Dec. 24, 1922, in Villisca, Iowa, to Rae Sherwood and Gertrude Mae (McAdoo) Baldwin.  She graduated from Hamburg High School in 1938.


She was united in marriage to Cashus Austin Smith in Hamburg and moved with him to Santa Monica, Calif., where he was stationed in the Navy.  After his discharge they moved back to Hamburg.  They enjoyed traveling across the United States and Europe.  Square dancing was a favorite activity with both.  They moved several times for Cash’s work including Lincoln, Nebr.; Springfield, Mo.; Jackson, Miss.; and Bella Vista, Ark.  They then retired back to Hamburg.Jo liked spending time with family and friends and a favorite pastime was crocheting baby blankets for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.She was a member of the United Trinity Church in Hamburg and a member of PEO.


Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Cashus Austin Smith; her son, Alan Smith, and her brother, Robert Baldwin.


Jo is survived by daughters:  Pamela (Jonny) Beam and Patricia (Denny) Hendrickson all of Hamburg; grandchildren:  Quintin Smith of Omaha, Nebr.; Chad Smith of Hermitage, Tenn.; Tony (Donna) Beam of Kearney, Nebr.; Michael (Jacque) Beam of Hamburg, Kim (Dave) Dowling of Sidney, Iowa,  Darin (Jodi) Hendrickson of Hamburg, and Lori (Mark) Starner of Glenwood, Iowa; great-grandchildren:  Michael Smith of Hermitage, Tenn.; Samantha Smith of Peoria, Ariz.; Nicole Beam of Lincoln, Nebr.; Bailey and Myranda Starner of Glenwood, Iowa; Tyler and Kyle Beam of Hamburg, Mackenzie Hulsing of Sidney, Avery and Alyssa Dowling of Sidney,  Jozie and Lea Hendrickson of Hamburg; and other family and friends.


Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017, at the United Trinity Church in Hamburg with Pastor Jon Noble officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hamburg Cemetery.


The family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday evening (12/22) at Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg.


Memorials may be given to the United Trinity Church or Hamburg Rescue.
