The streets of downtown Nebraska City may soon be alive with the sound of music, thanks to the installation of a speaker system. The Nebraska City City Council heard an update on the speaker project from Amy Allgood, executive director of Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce, and Mark and Mark and Kerry Kattelman of Nebraska City Nutrition, who were part of the NCTC speaker system committee.
Allgood said the Wirth Foundation provided funding for the speakers and the original set of speakers had to be returned after it was discovered there were frequency issues between the speakers and Nebraska City Utilities.
Midwest Sound in Lincoln has been working with NCTC on this project, said Allgood.
The new speaker system will utilize fiber optic cable and will feature block-by-block control.
Allgood said plans call for the speakers to be installed on building tops along Central Avenue this year. Speakers will be installed between 8th and 9th streets, and then between 9th and 10th streets.
Plans call for music to be played from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
