The City of Nebraska City will repurpose about $410,000 in Community Development Block Grant Funds to help fund a street improvement project in the Kearney Hill neighborhood.

The Nebraska City City Council hosted a public hearing on the matter during the council’s Nov. 4 regular meeting.

The road improvement project would install 27-foot-wide, 7-inch-thick concrete pavement with curb and gutter on about 900 feet of 5th Rue between 5th Terrace and Oakview Drive. A new storm sewer system would also be installed. Total project cost is estimated at $729,732.

Nebraska City Construction Facilities Manager Marty Stovall said plans call for the project to be designed and bid during the winter, with construction to start in the spring of 2025.

During the meeting, the council also

Heard a quarterly report on the Nebraska City Veterans Memorial Building Project;

Discussed an agreement with High Level Promotions regarding the acquisition of sponsorships for the Nebraska City Sports Complex; and

Approved advertising for bids for the North 11th Street Trail Project.

Mayor Bryan Bequette also proclaimed Monday, Nov. 11, as Veterans Day in Nebraska City and Thursday, Nov. 14, as Nebraska City News-Press Day to celebrate the 170th anniversary of the paper’s founding.

The next regularly scheduled Nebraska City City Council meeting is set for 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, in the Gary White Memorial Room/Council Chambers of the Rowe Memorial Public Safety Complex, 1518 Central Ave.
