NEBRASKA CITY – Leonard D. Bassinger, age 94 of Nebr. City passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at the Norfolk Veterans Home in Norfolk, NE. Leonard was born on June 25, 1927 southeast of Nebraska City; near the former town of Minersville; the son of Dwight and Julia Marie (Kleineweber) Bassinger. He entered the United States Army on January 19, 1951. He proudly served his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on October 18, 1952 receiving the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the United Nations Service Medal and the Army Occupation Medal.

On June 15, 1952, he was united in marriage to Arlene M. Behrends in rural Dunbar, NE and to this union three children were born: Linda, Bob and David.

Leonard worked for Knisley Construction where he did construction on the river and built dikes. Later, he was Manager at Steinhart Terminal for many years until his retirement. He was a former member of the Eagles and the American Legion.

Leonard is survived by his children: Linda Betts and David Bassinger both of Nebraska City; two grandchildren: Laci Arthur (Jason) and Shane Bassinger; five great-grandchildren: Kyler, Taylor, Ryder and Kolter Arthur and Reed Bassinger; siblings: Darlene Bassinger of Nebr. City, NE and Jerry Bassinger of Sacramento, CA; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Bassinger on November 1, 2002; a son Bob Bassinger on April 23, 2020; his parents and siblings; Miner Bassinger, Dewey Dale Bassinger and Donovan Bassinger.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 17, 2021 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City with Rev. Michael Schmidt officiating. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City with Military Honors conducted by the Nebraska Army National Guard Funeral Honors Detail and the Talmage American Legion.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, (12/16) at the mortuary.
