Harold L. Zahn

Harold L. Zahn, 92 of Syracuse, passed away on October 23, 2022, at the Syracuse Hospital. He was born on October 8, 1930, to Leonard & Rosa (Thiesfeld) in Burr, Nebraska. After graduating from Syracuse High School, Harold joined the Marine Corps and served as a MP reaching the rank of Corporal. During his service, he spent one year in Korea and was on guard near Panmunjom when the POWs were exchanged.

On September 6, 1957, Harold married Betty Auer at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Syracuse. He was blessed to become a father, grandfather and great grandfather and loved his family immensely. Harold farmed and raised cattle for many years, with Betty by his side. He was a 65-year member of the Syracuse American Legion & VFW and served as a commander for both. He was also a 60-year member of the Honor guard and served on the school board for 16 years. Harold was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, enjoyed playing cards, catching up with friends at coffee and sharing many stories. After moving to town, he still had a strong love for the farm and cattle and would often be found checking on them.

Survived by his children: Tracy Zahn of Syracuse, Todd (Corinne) Zahn of Unadilla, Troy Zahn of Syracuse, Tyler (Lori) Zahn of Louisville; grandchildren: Becky (Michael) West, Karla Zahn, Brian Zahn, McKenna Zahn, Logan Zahn & special friend Sloane Augustus, Jake Zahn, Olivia Zahn; great grandchildren: Ike & Hayes West, Harrison Zahn; sisters: Rosalie Hall, Carol (Jim) Munford; sister-inlaw: Darlene Auer; nieces, nephews and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty; sister Dorothy (Clarence) Petersen; brother-in-law: Bob Hall. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 27 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s UCC in Syracuse. The service will be livestreamed on St. John’s UCC Facebook page. A public burial will take place prior to the church service at 1:00 p.m. at the Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home in Syracuse.

Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to: St. John’s UCC, Syracuse Fire Dept. or American Legion Post #100 Baseball.
