The first 2025 Hot Topics presentation was a presentation on domestic assault given by Chief Ben Murry of the Nebraska City Police Department on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Domestic assault occurs when a person knowingly causes bodily injury to his or her intimate partner, threatens that intimate partner with imminent bodily injury, or threatens that intimate partner in a menacing manner, said Murry.

He added that in domestic assault cases, the victim doesn’t have to press charges. He said the state of Nebraska is mandated to press charges in such cases.

Murry said that sometimes law enforcement is not called when domestic assault occurs because the partner who is injured or threatened may not want his or her partner to get in trouble or to be arrested because the household income may decrease.

He said that failure to report instances of domestic assault and finding long-term solutions to breaking the cycle of domestic assault are areas where the community still needs to improve.

Hot Topics and NCTC Member Mixers are alternating on the second Wednesday of the month. The next event will be a Member Mixer at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the NCTC Office, 806 1st Ave.

The next Hot Topics presentation is scheduled for 8 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, at 8 a.m. in the Kimmel Gallery of the Morton-James Public Library.

Call the chamber office at 402-873-6654 for more information on either program series.
