ELIZABETH A. (KASTENS) GUSTAFSON

Elizabeth A. (Kastens) Gustafson, 86 of Eagle, formerly of Otoe, entered into rest on April 8th, 2023, at her home. She was born on Oct. 27th, 1936, to Lawrence & Shirley (Miller) Naffziger in Jefferson City, Missouri. Liz attended Peru State College where she received her teaching certificate and taught in country schools until she and Harold started their family. On June 14th, 1957, she married Harold G. Kastens in Otoe and they were blessed with 5 children. Harold passed away in 1997. Liz had many loves in her life including gardening, reading, cooking for family, crossword puzzles, polka music, nature, and all animals.

GLADYS MAE WESTON

Gladys Mae Weston, age 100 of Nehawka died April 7, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family. Gladys was born May 13, 1922 in Falls City, the daughter of Robert and Blanche (Filmer) Thorn. She married James Jewel Reys in 1940. James was killed in action during World War II. Gladys married Edward Weston October 4, 1945 in Seneca, KS. Ed died November 4, 1999. Gladys formerly lived in Oconto before moving to the Nehawka and Union areas several years ago. She worked at Ocoma Foods for several years before her retirement. Gladys was a member of the Nehawka United Methodist Church, Gold Star Mothers, Nehawka American Legion, VFW and Nebraska City Eagles Auxiliaries. Gladys loved people and it was said she never met a stranger. She was an avid sports fan and attended many games. She loved music and dancing and had served as a dance instructor. She is survived by her son, Thomas (Linda) Weston of Nebraska City; daughters, Linda (Jim) Nichols of Nehawka, Carol (Norm) Beccard of Union, and Tina (Mike) Pummel of Nebraska City; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sisters in law, Lorraine Thorn and Verdene Weston; many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands, daughter, Gloria; grandson, Jason Weston; great grandson, Matthew Boyden; sisters, Violet, Lavonne and Doris; brothers, Wayne, Kelly, Claude, Harley and Sherman. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at Marshall Funeral Chapel in Nebraska City with burial in East Union Cemetery near Union. Visitations will be 1:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at Marshall Funeral Chapel with the family greeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Memorials are suggested to the Nehawka Volunteer Fire Dept. or Nehawka United Methodist Church. VICKI LEE SCHARP

Vicki Lee Scharp, age 72 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at her home. Vicki was born on March 4, 1951 in Omaha, NE; the daughter of Earl “Scrump” and Darlene (Miller) Randolph. She grew up and went to elementary school in Riverton, IA. She graduated from Farragut High School in 1969. She was united in marriage to Phil Scharp on July 26, 1985 in Nebraska City. Vicki spent her entire career as a caregiver, working in different hospitals, nursing homes, Region V and finally over 25 years at the Nebraska School for the Visually Impaired where she retired from in 2012. In her younger years, she loved riding and competing in horse shows. Most recently, Vicki enjoyed walking, country dancing, growing flowers and going to the grandkids activities. She also volunteered at the Nebraska City Food Pantry, loved to organize PowerPoint Presentations for different activities, going to garage sales and collecting miniature shoes. Vicki is survived by her husband Phil Scharp of Nebr. City; children: Wendi Stenzel of Shenandoah, IA, Mandi Boehm (Ben) of Dunbar, NE and Kenneth Scharp of Nebr.
