The Lourdes Central Catholic girls’ basketball team recorded its first two wins of the season during road action at Humboldt-Table Rock/Steiner on Friday, Dec. 9, and during home action against Pawnee City on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
Keston Holman hit a three-point shot at the end of the first half and the Pioneer boys’ basketball team posted its best quarter of the game in the third frame to close within one point, but the visiting Syracuse Rockets won the fourth quarter 21-10 and took a 59-47 win on the final scoreboard on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
The Lourdes girls’ and boys’ basketball teams scored wins in Friday, Dec. 9, road action against Humboldt-Table Rock/Steiner. Scores from the games were 54-42 on the boys’ side and 55-31 on the girls’ side.
Due to a line up limited by illness, five Nebraska City athletes competed for the Pioneer girls’ wrestling team during one of the premier meets of the Midwest, the Council Bluffs Classic, hosted by the Mid America Center on Friday and Saturday.
The Nebraska City boys’ wrestling team competed at a 41-team showcase tournament at Council Bluffs. Earning team points for the Pioneers were Drew Weddle, 126, two match wins including one by pin; Gabe Hartman, 138, four wins coming by two major decisions, one sudden victory and one pin; Bayler Poston, 160, two wins including a win by pin; Jackson Kreifel, 182, four wins, two of which came by pin with one by major decision and one by decision; and Dane Lyons, 195, one win by pin.
After absorbing a season-opening loss to Beatrice, the Nebraska City girls’ basketball team established a lead, weathered a comeback attempt and sealed a 31-25 win over the Ralston Rams on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the Pioneer gym.
The Nebraska City boys’ basketball team fell in a close decision at Louisville on Thursday, Dec. 8, 45-42. Scoring for the Pioneers in the loss were Connor Causgrove, 12; Kalan Fritch, nine; Keston Holman, seven; Markus Nelson, six; Lucas Nielsen, five; and Daniel Adanza, three.
