Over the last month, the Knights of Columbus have hosted free throw competitions at three different levels. The Council local competition was followed up with winners advancing to districts in Plattsmouth on Feb. 26. Each of those winners advanced to Eastern Regionals in Lincoln, which was March 4. Winners were determined for girls and boys in ages from 9 to 14. Four of the district winners will be eligible to compete in the Nebraska State Championships in Grand Island on April 15.

Members of the Nebraska City middle school wrestling team competed at the Trailblazer Conference meet last weekend at Platteview. Placers with wins at the tournament for the Pioneer girls’ and boys’ teams are listed below.

Makayla Vasser, an eighth-grade grappler at Nebraska City Middle School, had a busy weekend of wrestling last week as she competed in three different events in two days. On Saturday, March 4, Vasser competed in the USA Folkstyle Nationals at Baxter Arena.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that millions of Americans experience traumatic brain injuries each year. In addition, each year around 1.5 million registered hospital admissions are related to traumatic brain injury in European countries. Studies indicate 69 million cases of traumatic brain injury are reported worldwide each year. Recovery from a traumatic brain injury can be lengthy. However, each incident is different and recovery rates and levels of disability after injury vary. A person with traumatic brain injury may need specialized medical attention and therapy. Recovery rates are higher in cases of mild to moderate traumatic injury. TBI further reports recovery statistics in moderate cases are approximately 60 percent, and about 25 percent are left with some disability. Mild injury cases often have good prognoses, but persistent neuropsychological deficits. Severe cases have the worst prognosis, with only around 25 to 30 percent resulting in positive outcomes.

Elmwood-Murdock sprinted through three rounds of postseason play including a district final win over Sterling on Friday, Feb. 24, to claim its position in the Class D-1 Girls State Basketball Tournament.

Fourth quarter free throw excellence insured a district final win for the Johnson-Brock girls’ basketball team in action against Bruning-Davenport-Shickley on Friday, Feb. 24.

The Nebraska City boys’ basketball team wrapped up the 2022-23 season with a subdistrict tournament loss to Plattsmouth. After establishing a double-digit lead at half, the Blue Devils went on to win by the final score of 48-25.
