Pioneers earn medals at Platteview

Track athletes from Nebraska City High School competed at the Platteview Invite on March 28.Earning medals for the Pioneer girls’ team were Tarryn Godsey, first, discus, 117’6”; Hannah Marth, fourth, shot, 33’4.5”; and Jayce Harrah, fourth, 800, 2:33.56; sixth, 400, 1:04.36.Earning medals for the Pioneer boys’ team were Kalan Frtich, fourth, long jump, 20’6.5”; JR Rico, fourth, 3200, 10:46.68; and Dane Sjulin, fifth, 400, 54.11.Photos by Kirt Manion

Pioneer, Pride clash evokes title-game memories

The early portion of the Nebraska City baseball schedule saw the Pioneers play three games and win one while having four others postponed.On March 19, the Pioneers topped Omaha Roncalli in a battle of coaches who were players on the Nebraska City American Legion Seniors 2002 Class B state championship team.Nick Schumacher, the winning pitcher in the state championship game that summer, ironically against the Roncalli Pride, is in his first year leading the Omaha-based baseball program.Kyle Ferguson, the Pioneer head coach, was also featured prominently on that 2002 squad.This year’s high school match up of the Pride and Pioneers shared one other common link with the summer title game in that it went to extra frames with the Nebraska City side winning a close decision, 7-6.Nebraska City had nine hits for the game.

NSAA, NCPA announce winter Academic All-State recipients
