Nebraska City Seniors drop nail biter, end season at Area Tourney

Elmwood-Murdock/Nehawka broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning and hung on for a 2-1 elimination round win over the Nebraska City American Legion Seniors baseball team in an elimination round game on Saturday, July 27, at the Area Tournament at Plattsmouth.Nebraska City got three hits of offense from Sam Rovetto, Greyson Flash and Carter Hoyle in taking the loss.Derek Van Arsdol pitched six innings, struck out eight, walked none and allowed two earned runs on five hits.In their only other game of the Area Tournament, the Nebraska City team fell 11-0 to Springfield on Friday, July 26.Landon Ferguson and Sam Rovetto had hits for the Nebraska City team.Nebraska City pitchers combined to work four frames, strike out three, walk four and allow 11 runs, eight earned, on six hits.

Vasser’s health, confidence match wrestling success

A year ago, at this time, Makayla Vasser was recovering from a knee surgery that would keep her off the wrestling mat for the opening month of the Nebraska City High School season.This year, Vasser is fresh off an All-American finish at Fargo and is looking forward to more offseason wrestling leading up to the high school season in late November.Despite missing the first month of last season, Vasser was a dominant force for the Pioneers as a freshman and concluded her first year in the high school ranks by making it to the finals of the state tournament.She made it look easy and it seemed that she was 100 percent.While the injury was healed and Vasser was back on the mat, the process of recovery continued.
