Nebraska City posted a pair of three-run innings and finished with nine runs on nine hits in a 9-3 win over Crete in home baseball action at Clemmy Holmes FIeld on Tuesday, April 26. Five of the hits by the Pioneers were extra base pokes.
Although recent matches haven’t ended with the Nebraska City girls’ soccer team on top, those results continue to illustrate the traits of a Pioneer team which had refused to quit and has competed at every opportunity.
The Nebraska City girls’ and boys’ track teams were in action recently at Platteview with the boys’ team scoring 39 points and the girls’ team picking up 15 points. Individual medal winners for the boys’ team were MJ Nelson, fourth, 100, 11.8; second, 200, 23.5; and fourth, 400, 53.5; Alex Rico, fourth, 800, 2:10.14; and fourth, 1600, 4:52.56; Mason Houghton, second, 1600, 4:48.47; and third, 3200, 10:49.50; and Zach Ottemann, sixth, shot, 43’5”.
The Pioneer boys’ soccer team continued its excellent 2022 spring season on April 21 by taking down previously unbeaten Waverly 2-1 in a shoot out which improved the Nebraska City record to 7-2. In other recent games, the Pioneers won at Beatrice, 2-0 on April 14, and lost to Elkhorn North (8-5) by the score of 2-0. Beatrice topped the Pioneer team on Monday, April 25, 2-0, in the first round of the Trailblazer Conference.
The Nebraska City boys’ golf team finished second in a recent triangular at Glenwood against the host team and Plattsmouth. Glenwood shot 159 while the Pioneers shot 191 and Plattsmouth shot 258.
The Nebraska City tennis team played Omaha Gross and Blair in duals and also played at the Beatrice tournament in the week of April 18 to April 23. Valerie Bennie won 8-1 at No.
A run in the eighth inning broke a scoreless tie and sent the Nebraska City baseball team to a 1-0 win over Trailblazer Conference rival Plattsmouth on April 21. The Pioneers had six hits of offense in the win.
It seems each year we learn of potentially new corn pests or diseases we need to be aware of. Well, 2022 is no different. In October of 2021, the corn disease “Tar Spot” was positively confirmed in seven Nebraska counties, including Richardson County, in extreme southeast Nebraska. They believe it may have even been in corn fields in southeast Nebraska in 2020.
A team total of 70 points placed the Lourdes girls’ track team third in the 12-team Falls City Sacred Heart Invite on the Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca track on Tuesday, April 19. Aspen Meyer had first place finishes in both the high jump, 4’8”, and the 200 meter run in a time of 27.24.
Due to cancellations, the only varsity events for the Nebraska City boys’ golf team prior to April 21 were one tournament at Bay Hills on April 4 and a triangular on April 18. The team was scheduled to play at a triangular at Glenwood on April 21.
