Silver State Champs

The Nebraska City Elite 14s baseball team earned the USSSA 14AA Nebraska Silver State Championship in tournament action on July 1, 2 and 3 in Omaha. After pool play, the NC Elite 14s won four straight in bracket play to capture the title. During their title run, the NC 14s outscored their opponents 46-21. They finished their season with a record of 16-15-1. Players on the NC 14s this year were Callen Schnitzer, Braylon Fletcher, Dane Lyons, Tate Hawley, Trevor Flash, Landon Ferguson, Reed Hamling, Edgar Ruiz, Mason VonFeldt, Andrew Hodges, Blaine Leyden and Kaiden Klassen. Coaches were Kyle Ferguson (Head) and Dru Leyden and Alex Schnitzer (Assistants). Members of the team were honored during the American Legion Junior and Senior doubleheader on July 4. Vasser Attends Wrestling Tournament in Florida

Makyala Vasser, a soon-to-be eighth grader and standout wrestler at Nebraska City Middle School, posted an 11-1 record, took All American honors, and had 10 pins, during action at the AAU Scholastic Duals at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. Vasser’s 10 pins came in a combined time of six minutes and 26 seconds with her fastest pin coming in just 10 seconds. She finished sixth for most pins in the least amount of time. Reagan Gallaway from Amherst, Nebr., had 11 pins in eight minutes.

Sportsmanship principles all young athletes should know

Competitive sports have a lot to offer young people. In addition to exposing children to the thrill of competition, competitive sports can set a foundation for a lifetime of healthy living. One study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2014 found that afterschool physical activity programs were the most effective strategy to reduce childhood obesity among children between the ages of six and 12.
