SDSU Extension, Kansas State research and extension and Nebraska Extension will host a series of Diversifying with Small Ruminants workshops June 7 in Salina, Kan.; June 8 in O’Neill; and June 9 in Chamberlain, S.D. The program will go from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and lunch will be provided.
Fusarium head blight (FHB), also called head scab, is a fungal disease that infects wheat during flowering, which typically occurs between mid-May to early June in this area. This year, early maturity varieties and earlier planted winter wheat fields started heading on May 15 and likely will be flowering by May 21. Over the past 15 years widespread FHB epidemics occurred in Nebraska in 2007, 2008, 2015, and 2019. Southeast Nebraska is particularly prone to FHB issues. In addition to yield loss as high as 50%, FHB reduces grain quality and the received price at the elevator due to damaged kernels or presence of a mycotoxin.
National Police Week (May 11-16) is an opportunity to show our gratitude and appreciation to the men and women who put their lives on the line to keep our people and communities safe. Nebraskans take police week seriously.
The Good Life we all enjoy is made possible by the courageous men and women in blue. After traveling the state for the past 7 ½ years as governor, I know Nebraskans appreciate all that law enforcement does to keep them safe. While other states cut funding for the police, Nebraska is boosting our support for our law enforcement.

Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.” NIV God longs for his children to have a clean heart, because a person can’t have a good relationship with a dirty conscience.
In the 49 years since the Roe v. Wade decision, the prolife movement has displayed remarkable commitment and resolve. Decades of steady, grassroots efforts by prolife advocates are yielding not just state-level legislation which recognizes the humanity of unborn children but a growing culture of life which seeks to compassionately connect with expectant mothers who lack support.
I don’t know how you feel, but in my opinion, parenting is hard! Someone must have forgotten to hand me the instruction manual when my children came home. I have yet to meet a parent who wouldn’t appreciate one.
Isn’t it strange? We move through life and suddenly “discover” anew what our ancestors knew for years - probably thinking they had “discovered” them. What is it I am rambling about? Well – it started like this – about a million or so years ago .
While traveling in the Third District in recent weeks, I have been encouraged by the expertise and creativity our communities possess and sobered by the challenges we face. We have much to be thankful for, but there is also no shortage to the adversity we must overcome.
Grit and determination. Readiness to help at a moment’s notice. Willingness to work long and hard. Steadfastness in the face of difficulty. These are the qualities that define us as Nebraskans. And we saw them on full display last month as our state battled the worst fires in a decade.
