Nebraska Travels

Every August, I always enjoy traveling the state to visit directly with Nebraskans. Taking a moment to speak with constituents, listen to their concerns, and talk about how we can best serve them is an important part of my job. This year, I had the opportunity to travel through the western portion of our state and visit with folks in ten different communities.

Three Steps to Every Good Thing

We want the most we can get out of life. It is said that the three most important words in real estate are, “Location-Location-Location.” Piggybacking off that statement a person chimed, “What are the three most important words in gaining traction in the spiritual life? ‘Humility-Humility-Humility.’” Here are three ways that humility can help you share your faith and become effective in the knowledge of every good that that Christ has given you: Step One: Humility that takes the faith of Christ for personal faith. Jesus at Gethsemane came to the realization that he was about to literally become the sin of the world (ref. 2 Corinthians 5:21). Every prodigal and dastardly deed that all of us would commit past-present-future, would be placed on him to the extent that he would literally become our sin, every obstacle that stood between us and God. Jesus’ faith was that God’s benevolence, love, and mercy would triumph over that evil. If God can raise Christ from the dead with his love and grace after becoming sin, that truth is sufficient to expel any doubt we could have for God’s love.

Time – to Ponder

Well, I have had a while to be by myself – like 5 days in complete isolation and 10 days of wearing a mask if I did go out of my apartment. Covid – like Elvis, has left the building. At least I hope it has. I imagine Covid symptoms vary from person to person as in most viruses and diseases.

A Special Nebraska Tradition

Nebraska has many traditions, but one of my personal favorites is our State Fair. For over a century and a half, the State Fair has served as an important annual forum to celebrate our state’s agricultural sector, as well as showcase the food, people, and culture that make Nebraska special. In fact, the tradition stretches all the way back to when Nebraska was just a U.S. territory.

Growth for a strong future

As communities across Nebraska’s Third District are turning their attention to back-to-school matters, preparation for harvest, and of course, Cornhusker football, this season I have had the opportunity to appreciate many of the things that make the people and culture of our state special. Among our many blessings, we have talented young people, world-class agriculture producers, and a heritage of dedicated service laid down by Nebraskans who came before us.

Sherlock Spirituality

I was watching the sequel of Sherlock Holmes that was directed by Guy Ritchie. In both of these films he incorporates a dazzling style of filming where he slows down the camera to enliven every single vivid detail to certain action scenes. But what really gives it a flare is when we’re invited into Sherlock’s thought patterns before he takes action.

Nebraska’s agricultural innovations

Nebraska is a land of pioneers. Our state was settled by hardy homesteaders who ventured across windswept prairies in search of opportunity. While we often celebrate the grit and determination of these early Nebraskans, they deserve equal credit for their ingenuity. Their inventiveness helped transform the Great Plains into some of the most productive agricultural land in the world.

Husker Football & Harvest Season

In Nebraska, the sun shines brightly on the glorious days of fall. The fall season is filled with multiple important “seasons,” especially to the State of Nebraska: harvest and Husker football, though perhaps not as much after the loss to Northwestern in Dublin. Farmers across Nebraska are ending a dry growing season and are in a race against the clock to harvest before winter. Saturday mornings this time of year are filled with energy as Nebraskans roll in combines and trucks through fields with Husker football on the radio.
