With days left in the Christmas season, Nebraska City’s own Margaret Spiers and her Christmas Wishes program keeps pressing forward to bring light and hope to as many as possible. As many readers already know, the Christmas Wishes program came about when Spiers found money on a street in Nebraska City and wanted to make sure it was put to good use.
Rosemary, Rosmarinus offi�cinalis, although not as popular as poinsettias, is common during the holidays. It combines ornamental beauty and the usefulness of a culinary herb in one attractive plant. It is often sold as small pine tree-shaped tabletop plants or in variously shaped topiary forms. It’s not surprising they are so popular, given their beauty and fragrance. Their fresh piney fragrance is refreshing, especially during the dreary winter months.
The Nebraska City High School speech team competed at the Norris High School speech meet on Saturday, Dec. 4 and we had two students qualify for fi�nals. Isabelle Bare placed 3rd in humorous prose, and Jaden Leasure placed 5th in humorous prose as well.
Third graders at Hayward Elementary led a school wide Food Drive donating items to the local Food Pantry from Nov. 17-30. Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 had a friendly competition to see who could place the most feathers on their turkey as they donated.
Nebraska City sixth graders in Ms. Dunn’s enrichment class recently attended Leadership Summit: Hike Your Leadership Trail. The Leadership Summit is a new 4-H school enrichment program off�ered by Nebraska Extension in Otoe County.

The annual eff�ort is designed to assist with traffi�c fl�ow and roadway safety with thousands of fans traveling across the state to Lincoln for Husker football games.
After a year off for COVID-19, the annual Nebraska City Advent Recital brought together local choirs and an audience eager to hear live holiday music. The event combined choral music, community carol singing, and scriptural messages, followed by refreshments.
