The Arbor Day Foundation's Community Tree Recovery Program held nearly 200 events where volunteers helped plant approximately 150,000 trees in communities impacted by natural disasters in its fiscal year from June 2020 to June of 2021.

The Lourdes speech team placed third overall on Saturday at the Ashland-Greenwood Speech Meet. Medal winners were Emma Misner, fourth in Extemporaneous; Theresa Gygi, fifth in Informative and fifth in Dramatic Interpretation; Trinity Salmons, sixth in Dramatic Interpretation and second in novice D.I., and Reed Greger, first in Poetry and first in Humorous Interpretation.
The 2022 Girl Scout Cookie Program is set to begin sales on Friday, Feb. 11. This year, nine cookie varieties will be offered for sale, from perennial favorites such as Thin Mints and Caramel deLites to the new offering, Adventurefuls.
Family members and friends of Rose T. Garey were on hand Saturday for a special ceremony at the Otoe County Museum of Memories in Syracuse as the herb garden at the museum was officially named the Rose T. Garey Herb Garden.
Members of the Nebraska City High School speech team competed at the Lincoln Southwest speech meet on Jan. 22. Team member Valerie Bennie was a semifinalist in persuasive speaking, meaning that she was a top 24 placer in the meet, but did not advance to finals for the top 6 after the semifinal round.
Representatives from the Nebraska City American Legion Post 8 and the Nebraska City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2634, both of which meet currently at the Nebraska City Eagles Club, have presented new flags for the club to use on the poles outside their building at 600 1st Corso. One lucky player who bought a Nebraska Pick 5 ticket for the Wednesday, January 19 drawing is holding a ticket worth $130,000. The Nebraska Lottery has confirmed that one ticket sold for Wednesday’s Nebraska Pick 5 draw matched all five winning numbers for the $130,000 jackpot.
During the month of December 2021, sixteen people were killed in traffic crashes on Nebraska roadways, according to data collected by the Nebraska Department of Transportation. These 16 fatalities occurred in 14 fatal crashes.
