Melanoma signs & symptoms

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that affects melanocytes, or the cells that produce the skin pigment melanin. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that the sun's UVB rays stimulate melanocytes, and more than 90 percent of melanomas are thought to be caused by ultraviolet exposure. Melanoma can exhibit different symptoms depending on the part of the body it is affecting, and may not affect everyone in the same way. The following are some of the signs and symptoms of melanoma.

DHHS, Department of Education partner to improve mental health services in schools

For rural educators in Nebraska City, Lexington, and Valentine, mental health help for their students is on the way. The Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) and Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services - Division of Behavioral Health (DHHS-DBH) are collaborating with three Local Education Agencies (LEAs) of Lexington, Nebraska City, and Valentine to improve school-based mental health services.

Bird flu detected in backyard flock, wild birds around Nebraska

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) in conjunction with the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is announcing a confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a backyard flock in Merrick County. Since the initial announcement of a detection of HPAI in a wild goose in Lincoln on March 7, additional cases of the virus have been confirmed in wild geese in Cedar and Douglas counties.

Quiz Bowl Champions

The Lourdes Central Catholic Quiz Bowl team won the 17-team Pioneer Conference championship at Southern High School on Wednesday. Some of the Pioneer Conference schools were represented by more than one team. The Pioneer Conference Quiz Bowl event was the first competition of the year for Lourdes and included eight rounds of pool play followed by a championship bracket.
