Descendant of first Army aeronaut speaks at GAR Hall

An inventive mind and a long-time fascination with balloons led Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe to be the first aeronaut in the United States military.Terry Lowe of Lincoln, a great-great-grandnephew of Thaddeus, introduced an AppleJack audience to his ancestor and the beginnings of aerial surveillance during war in an hour-long presentation at the Civil War Veterans Museum and GAR Hall.Lowe said Thaddeus was largely self-taught as a young man, and he teamed up with a traveling chemistry professor who helped him learn about chemistry and also travel the country.
