NC Crime Stoppers is Rotary Club topic

The main objective of the Nebraska City Crime Stoppers organization is to assist law enforcement agencies by fund-raising to help pay out rewards based on citizens’ anonymous tips about crimes.The organization, which has been in existence in Nebraska City for 41 years, was the topic of discussion at the April 3 meeting of the Nebraska City Rotary Club.Nebraska City Crime Stoppers, which earned its 501c3 tax-exempt status in 2023, dissolved and reformed in 2021, said Katie Drake-Heng, who has been a board member of the organization for the past five years.

March Traffic Fatality Toll

During the month of March 2024, twenty-two people were killed in traffic crashes on Nebraska roadways, according to data collected by the Nebraska Department of Transportation.These 22 fatalities occurred in 18 fatal crashes.Nine of the nineteen vehicle occupants killed were not using seatbelts, seven were using a seatbelt, and three had seatbelt usage marked as unknown.Eighteen of the fatalities were in rural locations.There were two fatalities on the interstate, fifteen on other highways, and five on local roads.One of the fatalities was a pedestrian.Two of the fatalities were motorcyclists.

The Early Development Network of Educational Services Unit 4 in Auburn helps improve educational outcomes for children before they even start school.Jason Hippen, director of student services for Nebraska City Public Schools, and his early intervention team of physical therapy Jenna Henrichs, occupational therapist Abby Lollmann, and speech language pathologist Sarah Roberts spoke at the April 10 Hot Topics about early childhood special education and free resources parents can take advantage of through the NCPS school district.Referrals to the early intervention team come from ESU 4, said Hippen, and they can be made by a parent or another member of the community if the child is younger than age 3.

Hollywood is 2024 NCHS prom theme

This year’s Nebraska City High School prom, which took place Saturday, April 6, in the NCHS Commons, had the theme “Hollywood.” Tristan Kingery and Madisen Tietz were crowned prom king and queen.

County commissioners approve solar applications moratorium

The Otoe County Board of Commissioners has approved a 90-day moratorium on conditional use permit applications for commercial/utility grade solar energy system projects.Board members approved the moratorium during the regular Otoe County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, April 9.The decision was made to give the Solar Energy System Zoning Review Committee an opportunity to report on current zoning regulations for such projects.
