The Bobcat volleyball team faced some tougher opponents this past weekend and came home from the Hastings Tournament with a 0-4 mark.
Peru State fell to #20 Montana Tech 25-21, 13-25, 28-30, 19-25 and Montana Western 25-15, 21-25, 22-25, 21-25 on Friday. Then, on Saturday, the Bobcats fell to #19 Hastings 21-25, 16-25, 17-25 and Carroll (Mont.) 17-25, 19-25, 18-25.
With the four losses, the 'Cats fell to 9-5 on the season.
Montana Tech Game Highlights
In the first set, Montana Tech jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Peru State tied it at 7-7 on a Tech attack error. The set was later tied at 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 before the Bobcats took the lead for good on a serving error. Peru State's largest lead was at 19-13 on a kill by Cristal Quinonez (Anthony, N.M.) on an assist from Brooke Rudebusch (Moorpark, Calif.). The 'Cats finished the first set on a kill by Jhessica Martins (Uberlandia, Brazil) on an assist from Rudebusch.
The second set was tight early as the Bobcats were within one a 9-8 before Montana Tech started to pull away. Attack errors hit Peru State in the second set.
Tech jumped to a 6-1 lead in the third set before the Bobcats started to make their comeback. Peru State eventually tied the set at 12-12 on a kill by Lea Boras (Makarska, Croatia) off an assist from Rudebusch. The teams basically traded points throughout the rest of the set with Tech leading 20-18 before kills by Rian Kirby (Gretna) and Boras – coming from assists by Rudebusch and Martins – tied it at 20-20. The Bobcats did have set point at 28-27 on a Martins kill, but Tech came back and scored the next three points for the third set win.
Peru State never led in the fourth set, but was within two late at 18-16 after a Tech service error. But, that was as close as the Bobcats would get as Montana Tech went on to take the set and match.
Martins was the only Bobcat in double figures with kills as she finished with 12. Nohely Perez (Caracas, Venezuela), in her first playing time, added nine kills with Boras finishing with seven.
Rudebusch had 42 assists in the loss.

Martins was credited with the team's three service aces.
Shannon Liewer (Imperial) led the team with 33 digs while Martins finished the contest with a double-double as she added 11 digs to go with her 12 kills. Rudebusch was just one dig short of a double-double as she added nine.
Rudebusch and Martins were each credited with one solo block. Kirby had two block assists with Martins, Janjevic, Meg Grose (Peoria, Ariz.), and Quinonez each adding one.
Other Games
It has been noted that there were numerous statistical errors in the final three games of the tournament so only the scores will be reported at this point.
Upcoming Games
Peru State will host its own tournament this weekend which will also include one Heart of America Athletic Conference regular-season game. The opponents will include current Heart member Graceland (Iowa) and future Heart members Clarke (Iowa) and Mount Mercy (Iowa).
On Friday night, Clarke will face Mount Mercy at 5 p.m. This will be followed by the "official Heart" contest between the Bobcats and Graceland. It is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, the schedule is as follows:
11 a.m. – Graceland vs. Mt. Mercy
1 p.m. – Clarke vs. Peru State
3 p.m. – Graceland vs. Clarke
5 p.m. – Peru State vs. Mt. Mercy
Presently, Graceland is 6-8 overall and 1-0 in the Heart while Mount Mercy is 12-4 and Clarke is 8-0.
