Gene Obbink, 92, of Creston, died Saturday, February 7, 2015 in Creston. Celebration of Life Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015 at the Powers Funeral Home junction of highway 25 and 34 in Creston. Mary O’Riley will officiate. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Lincoln, Neb. at a later date. Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Powers Funeral Home. Gene (Dorman) Obbink, daughter of Leon Adalbert Dorman and Jeanette (DeWitt) Dorman, was born July 21, 1922 in Garnet, Mich.

On February 16, 1946, Gene married Richard J. Obbink in Reno, Nev. In 1956 they moved to Nebraska City, Neb. where she owned and operated her own collection agency and credit bureau. While in Nebraska City, Gene was a member of the Nebraska City Utilities Board for 24 years and also the secretary for the Nebraska City Civil Service Commission for 32 years. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Nebraska City for 57 years. In 2003, Gene moved to Creston, Ia. where she was involved with the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her two daughters, Darla (husband Bill) Shallenberger of Creston and Mary O. Bond of Bellevue, Neb.; two grandchildren: Jeni (husband Matt) Kirsch of Glenwood and Jason (wife Nikki) Shallenberger of Norwalk and great-grandchildren Grant, Jack and Max Shallenberger and Carter Kirsch. Gene was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard in 1992, son-in-law Ross E. Bond, sister Ruthe Seaman and brother Lewis Dorman.
