John Bruns, 51, Elmwood, Neb., was killed yesterday when his 2011 Kenworth propane truck was struck by a northbound Union locomotive.

Bruns was driving a Drake propane Service truck when he was struck as he crossed the railroad tracks on County Road C, approximately a half mile west of Highway 75, about five miles north of Nebraska City.

Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, however it is believed that Bruns was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to a press release from the Otoe county sheriff's office.

Fire and rescue units from Nebraska City, Union and Nehawka responded to the crash. A HazMat team from Bellevue was also on the scene.

As of publication, emergency crews are still working on removing an estimated 1000 gallons of propane that were still in the wrecked truck.

Crews are attempting to remove the propane by burning it off, a process which began during the evening on Tuesday.

"It's going really slow," said Sheriff James Gress. "We were hoping it would be done by 8 a.m. but right now it's looking like it's going to take quite awhile."
