Roger Kopf of the Veterans of Foreign Wars has led an effort to resume hanging the U.S. flag on downtown street lights.

City Administrator Joe Johnson said veterans noted in October that flags have not been displayed on Central Avenue east of 11th Street since the new light poles were installed in the 1980s.

Steven Wademan, commander of the American Legin Post 8, said Kopf has been instrumental is getting a flag holders designed and a prototype produced.

The prototype has been installed on a pole across the street from the U.S. Post Office near Fifth Street.

Johnson said the light poles also need to be painted.

Wademan said although the American Legion fully supports this effort(, along with the 40&8, Disabled American Veterans and auxiliaries, full credit should go to the VFW Post 2634 and the efforts of Roger Kopf.
