Husker VB scores third consecutive sweep, tops Terps

The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team earned a 25-14, 27-25, 25-14 win over Maryland on Saturday in front of a crowd of 8,477 at John Cook Arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. 

Rebekah Allick had a career-high-tying 13 kills and hit .750. Harper Murray notched 10 kills and 10 digs, and Andi Jackson added nine kills on .800 hitting.  

The Huskers (12-0, 2-0 B1G) hit .360 and held the Terrapins (7-5, 0-2 B1G) to .090. 

NU had 11 blocks on the day, its most in the last five matches. Allick had six of them, which moved her to No. 5 at NU in the rally scoring era with 460. Jackson had four blocks, and Allie Sczech had three. 

Bergen Reilly put up 29 assists, six digs and four kills. Campbell Flynn added six assists and three digs. 

Nebraska served five aces, including two by Olivia Mauch and Murray. Mauch had a team-best 10 digs. 

Set 1: Maryland led 5-3 before a 5-0 Husker run served by Jackson. The junior middle blocker had an ace in that run, and Allick had a pair of blocks while Murray had a kill. Kills by Landfair and Murray pushed the lead to 12-8. Jackson hammered a kill for a 15-10 lead at the media timeout. Murray added two kills and an ace to make it 18-11, and three straight kills by Reilly, Allick and Skyler Pierce gave NU a 23-13 lead. The Big Red finished off a 25-14 win, hitting .312 and holding Maryland to -.067.   

Set 2: Maryland took a 5-2 lead, but kills by Murray and Jackson and two by Allick put the Big Red in front, 8-7. Teraya Sigler and Allick added kills before an ace by Mauch made it 12-9. Allick and Sigler again recorded kills, and Allick and Sczech posted NU’s sixth block before another Allick kill made it 19-12. But the Terps went on a 10-3 run to tie the set at 22-22. Jackson terminated for the Big Red, but Maryland answered. The Huskers earned set point on a block by Jackson and Sczech, but a service error tied the score at 24-24. Reilly turned to Jackson again out of the middle, but Maryland answered with a kill once again. Allick gained NU’s third set point, and this time the Huskers finished off the Terps, 27-25, with a Murray kill. 

Set 3: The Huskers came out of intermission strong with a 5-0 lead served by Mauch that included an ace by the sophomore libero. Virginia Adriano had two kills and a block with Jackson, who also had a kill. Ahead 9-6, Reilly served a 5-0 Husker run in which Allick had three kills and a block with Landfair, who also tallied a kill. Back-to-back Murray kills increased NU’s lead to 18-8. Manaia Ogbechie pounded a kill, and Reilly swung for another before a Murray ace put NU up 21-11. The Huskers went on to win 25-14.
