Martha, age 93, died due to complications from dementia @ Brighton Gardens’ Reminiscence Unit Jan. 21, 2023. She was born at home in Nebraska City, Ne. April 17, 1929 to C.L. DeLong and Irene (Davis) DeLong. Martha was a member of Nebraska City High School’s 1947 graduating class. Cremation has taken place with private family services being held at a later date. In those years she was known as a remarkable athlete, showing gaited horses against women 20 years and more her senior. Her competitive nature allowed her to win or place in every class she entered. Derry Jane, Martha’s most prized horse, was the national 1st place 3 gaited mare until being struck down with malaria in 1947.
Martha graduated from UNL in 1951 with a degree in Elementary Education. She regrettably gave up her horse show career when she married Frederic L.A. Cady in 1952, a decision that was expected of her at that time. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, the Junior League of Omaha, and numerous civic organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents in 1969, son Frederic 111 in 1991, ex-husband Frederic in 1993, and sister Nancy DeLong Hoch and aunt Ruth DeLong Asboe in 2021. Survived by daughter, Deborah, Omaha, Ne. Cremation will take place.
