Betty J. Zahn, 86 of Syracuse, passed away peacefully at home on December 30, 2021. She was born on January 26, 1935 to William & Louisa (Brinkhoff) Auer near Syracuse. Betty attended Burr High School, where she participated in softball and volleyball, while winning many championships along the way. She continued her love of sports as she got older, playing golf and bowling. On September 6, 1957, she married Harold Zahn at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Syracuse. She was a wonderful wife to Harold and became a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Betty worked for 45 years as a physician’s aide in both Syracuse and Nebraska City. When at home she helped Harold take care of the farm. Betty was an American Legion Aux. member for 55+ years, St. John’s UCC member as well as belonging to the women’s fellowship. She enjoyed cooking, playing cards, gardening and her flowers.
She is survived by her husband Harold Zahn of Syracuse; children Tracy Zahn of Syracuse, Todd (Corinne) Zahn of Unadilla, Troy Zahn of Syracuse, Tyler (Lori) Zahn of Louisville; grandchildren Becky (Michael) West, Karla Zahn, Brian Zahn, McKenna Zahn, Jake Zahn, Logan Zahn, Olivia Zahn; great grandchildren Ike & Hayes West; sisters-in-law: Darlene Auer, Rosalie Hall, Carol (Jim) Munford; nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Alice (Fritz) Sporhase, Ivan Auer, Arlin (Janis) Auer, Duane (Cetta) Auer, Eunice (Ed) Snyder; brother-in-law: Bob Hall and sister-in-law Dorothy (Clarence) Petersen.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 5 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Syracuse. The service will be livestreamed on St. John’s UCC Facebook page. A public burial will take place prior to the church service at 10:00 a.m. at Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 4 from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home in Syracuse.
Memorials are suggested to St. John’s UCC or Syracuse Rescue Squad.
