Can Care-A-Van

The 38th annual 10/11 Can Care-A-Van set up three Nebraska City locations to collect food for the Nebraska City Food Pantry at the First United Methodist Church. Nebraska City Fire and Rescue spent June 9 “stuffing the ambulance” at Walmart, and collections were also taken at Fareway and Dollar Fresh grocery stores. The goal of the day was to collect 10,000 pounds of food, and by day’s end, 22,674 pounds of food had been collected.

Legislative Update

We have reached the Interim period at the Legislature. During this period, we have interim study hearings regarding pending bills or possibly looking at potential legislation. Senators and staff will prepare for these in the summer months and most interim study hearings will take place in the fall.

Know your Family Health History

Foundational education as an RN with a BSN from South Dakota State University provided a broad understanding of how our bodies function. One of the lessons that was high lighted over the years was the need to pay attention to changes, e.g., my two sisters needed total knee replacement and so did I; my paternal grandfather had a massive stoke and died at the age of 61 years in 1948 from what? It was never diagnosed. My father thought that his dad, who was a farmer, was too stubborn to get regular check-ups from a physician and probably had heart problems in addition to his high blood pressure.
