County commissioners approve KENO grant request for Kearney Hill fort project

A fort-themed pavilion at Kearney Hill Park is closer to becoming a reality after the Otoe County Board of Commissioners approved an $8,000 KENO grant request from the City of Nebraska City to complete funding for the construction project.Rex Nelson of the Kearney Hill Neighbors group told the board that the park has great views of the Missouri River Valley, which the group hopes will attract people to the park and the pavilion.Nelson said the Paul, John, Anton, and Doris Wirth Foundation granted $40,000 to the project, and an additional $2,000 has been pledged by residents.

Nebraska City Seniors drop nail biter, end season at Area Tourney

Elmwood-Murdock/Nehawka broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning and hung on for a 2-1 elimination round win over the Nebraska City American Legion Seniors baseball team in an elimination round game on Saturday, July 27, at the Area Tournament at Plattsmouth.Nebraska City got three hits of offense from Sam Rovetto, Greyson Flash and Carter Hoyle in taking the loss.Derek Van Arsdol pitched six innings, struck out eight, walked none and allowed two earned runs on five hits.In their only other game of the Area Tournament, the Nebraska City team fell 11-0 to Springfield on Friday, July 26.Landon Ferguson and Sam Rovetto had hits for the Nebraska City team.Nebraska City pitchers combined to work four frames, strike out three, walk four and allow 11 runs, eight earned, on six hits.
