An archaeological excavation site is similar to creating a cake in that you cannot complete restore a dig to its original pre-excavation state any more than you can unbake a cake.Archaeologist Nolan Johnson of History Nebraska made that comparison during his presentation on Nebraska archaeology on Saturday, March 9, at the Missouri River Basin-Lewis and Clark Center during the center’s annual Native American Artifact Show.Johnson said archaeologists use a lot of math and science and note-taking when evaluating a site, and he added that cultural resource management is the most common reason archaeological work is done in Nebraska.Johnson localized his presentation to include information on archaeological work done at the Cowles flour mill north of Nebraska City as well as work done at Duck Creek Recreational Area before the reservoir was filled.
