Last week, the U.S. Senate passed my resolution protecting truckers and consumers. The legislation would overturn a Biden administration rule that makes emissions standards stricter for heavyduty vehicles like trucks. This aggressive rule, released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), would force truckers to purchase new, expensive equipment to abide by a radical climate agenda — which would burden our economy as a whole.
Thanks to perseverance, teamwork, and innovation, a 1920s era ELI windmill once again spins in the skies over Nebraska City. The restored and regalvanized mill was the site of an afternoon ribbon cutting on Thursday, April 27, near the Greenhouse at Arbor Day Farm.
Nebraska City shot 391 and finished 10th at an invitational golf tournament on the Beatrice Country Club Course on Monday, April 24. Leading the Pioneer boys’ team with a pair nine-hole 45s was Brody Koehler.
Imagine how just over one hundred years ago, nearly one-third of people in the upper Great Lakes and upper Midwest regions walked around with a goiter on their neck. A goiter is a lump on the throat, which could be as big as an orange, a grapefruit, or larger. Actually an enlargement of the thyroid gland, a goiter can come from an overactive thyroid gland, an under-active thyroid gland, or an autoimmune condition, but in the United States before the 1920s, the reason was almost always deficiency of iodine.
Well, I have a couple of words of wisdom for you this week. I learned them the hard way.

The String Beans entertained the children of Nebraska City on Friday morning, April 28, as the community’s elementary students came together on the lawn in front of Arbor Lodge to celebrate with songs. Carly Cardinal was on hand before the morning concert to greet the students. The concerts also featured tree-planting demonstrations, and each student received a cypress tree that they could take home and plant.
There were 762 poster contest entries from kindergarten through fifth grade at Nebraska City Public and Lourdes Central Catholic Elementary Schools. Posters were displayed in business windows along Central Avenue.
The Nebraska City girls’ and boys’ soccer teams wrapped up their 2023 seasons on April 29 at the subdistrict tournament. The boys’ team fell to Conestoga 5-0 while the girls’ team fell to Conestoga, 9-1.
