Brownville Concert Series to feature pianist, Ying Li

Twenty-four-year-old Chinese pianist Ying Li is the First Prize winner of the 2021 Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Auditions, as well as recipient of The Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival Prize and the Tri-I Noon Recitals Prize. She has received top awards in numerous national and international competitions. It’s sure to be one you won’t want to miss! She will be in concert on Sunday, April 16th at 2:00pm. We give special thanks to Jane Rohman for sponsoring the show. All in attendance are invited to a reception afterward at the historic Muir House. Area piano students are invited to a free Master Class after the reception at the Concert Hall and can attend the concert for free by registering with the Box Office.

Before my junior year in high school, I returned from a Boy Scout canoeing trip to discover my sister had been killed in a car crash. I will never forget the sadness of the moment when I walked into the house that was filled with what seemed like half the caring and wonderful town of De Smet to find my mom and dad there grieving. It was near the end of that summer, but the beginning of a long period of mourning for my family and me.

Nebraska Banana Republic?

On Sunday March 12, 2023, I had a “Letter to the Editor” titled “What happened to Nebraska” published in the Lincoln Journal Star. In that letter, I likened present day Nebraska to that of a third world banana republic by stating, “Today, Nebraska is casting itself more and more in the image of a third world ‘Banana Republic’ as it sells its soul to a posse of corrupt, self-serving state and national oligarchs, plutocrats and grifters who are using their wealth to buy elections for a posse of indebted loyalist who legislate censorship, extreme partisanship, obstructionism and a deepening social and economic stratification at the expense of all others.” Some readers will most likely ask, “What the hell is a banana republic?” To that question, we will let Robert Longley in his November 19, 2019, article titled, “What Is a Banana Republic? Definition and Examples” answer that question for you.
