County employee personnel policies to be reviewed, updated

The Otoe County Board of Commissioners approved reviewing and updating the county’s personnel policy during the board’s March 14 meeting. Board Chair Jerad Sornson appointed a committee consisting of Otoe County District 1 Commissioner Charles Cole, Otoe County Deputy Attorney Sarah Wiltse, Otoe County Assessor Kristi Smallfoot, Otoe County Clerk Jennifer Bassinger, and Otoe County Sheriff Colin Caudill to review the current policy, with the goal of having a revised policy in place by the end of the county’s fiscal year on June 30.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month which brings awareness of the need for people to access life-saving resources that prevent, detect, and treat colorectal cancer (CRC). Early-age onset CRC diagnoses are rising by 2% annually with well over 100,000 new cases each year, and by 2030 it is predicted that CRC will be the leading cause of death in people under age 50.

Arbor Day Foundation named partner in Girl Scout Tree Promise

Girl Scouts of the USA is one step closer to fulfilling the Girl Scout Tree Promise, thanks to a new partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation. As the world’s largest membership nonprofit dedicated to planting trees, the Arbor Day Foundation brings momentum to Girl Scouts’ commitment to 5 million climate supportive actions by 2026, including planting trees, protecting existing canopies, and providing tree education for Girl Scouts.

Steamboat Trace Grand Re-Opening celebration, 5K Depot Dash set April 15

The Nemaha Natural Resources District (NRD) is celebrating the Grand Re-Opening of the Steamboat Trace on April 15, 2023. The Grand Re-Opening ceremony will take place at 8:30 a.m. at the Peru Depot Trailhead located in Peru. Following the ceremony runners and walkers are invited to participate in the 5K Depot Dash at 9 a.m. Registration for the Depot Dash is required and can be found at www.getmeregistered. com/DepotDash or on the Nemaha NRD’s website under “News”. Registration costs $25 through March 30 and $30 until April 13. Following the Depot Dash, the village of Peru is hosting a pancake feed from 9 a.m. until around noon at the Peru City Hall (614 5th Street Peru, NE).
