Council approves first phase of housing development engineering services

The Nebraska City City Council approved a $136,000 task order from JEO for Phase I engineering services on the planned subdivision near CHI Health St. Mary’s during the council’s Feb. 6 regular meeting. The funds will be used as follows: Preliminary plat, $48,000; final plat, $7,500; final design, $74,000; and stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP), $6,500.

Senior Center Menu

Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging has released the senior lunch menu. The menu for the next week is as follows: Friday, Feb. 3: Beef stew, cornbread, fruit. Monday, Feb. 6: Chicken tenders, potato wedges, corn, fruit.

with Phyllis Buell Well, I amazed that the sun is coming up after all this morning. At least in Kansas City! I can imagine there are people in that great city that haven’t gone to bed yet because they didn’t want Sunday to end! I am at least wise enough to know which side “my bread is buttered on” with my family.

Smith named chair of House Ways and Means Trade Subcomittee

Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE) was named Chairman of the Trade Subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee on Jan. 26. Smith released the following statement: “American consumers and producers are being forced to the sidelines of the global economy because of the Biden administration’s failure to put forward a proactive trade agenda. Trade has the potential to lower costs for American families, level the playing field for American products abroad, and expand opportunities for American small businesses.

Removing restrictions for ATVs, UTVs

Last year, I introduced LB 1110, which outlined the provisions for registering all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility-terrain vehicles (UTVs) for street use. Unfortunately, that bill got stuck in committee and never made it to the floor. This year, I have introduced LB 66, which has the same intent as last year’s bill.

Empowering families

Students are a large part of why I’m so optimistic about the future of our great country. In recent years they’ve faced unprecedented challenges as COVID-19 disrupted traditional classroom settings. While Nebraskans worked hard to keep our schools open, other states can’t say the same. The resulting spotlight on public schools highlighted just how important parental engagement and freedom is to student success. Parents, not politicians, know what their children need in the classroom. This isn’t to say private education is always superior – I proudly attended Nebraska’s excellent public schools – but no child should be stuck in a failing system because of their ZIP code or socioeconomic status.
