Citizen's EDGE third graders at Hayward Elementary led a schoolwide food drive last month after a classroom presentation on George Washington Carver and a visit from Keith Thomson of the Nebraska City Food Pantry. On Nov. 30, the third graders walked all the donations over to the Nebraska City Food Pantry, which is located at the First United Methodist Church of Nebraska City, 1023 1st Ave. Students who brought in items placed a feather on the class turkeys in the lunchroom for each item donated. Final results were: third grade,184 items, fourth grade,103 items, and fifth grade, 32 items, for a school total of 319 items. The Nebraska City boys’ basketball team fell in a close decision at Louisville on Thursday, Dec. 8, 45-42. Scoring for the Pioneers in the loss were Connor Causgrove, 12; Kalan Fritch, nine; Keston Holman, seven; Markus Nelson, six; Lucas Nielsen, five; and Daniel Adanza, three.
After absorbing a season-opening loss to Beatrice, the Nebraska City girls’ basketball team established a lead, weathered a comeback attempt and sealed a 31-25 win over the Ralston Rams on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the Pioneer gym.
The Nebraska City boys’ wrestling team competed at a 41-team showcase tournament at Council Bluffs. Earning team points for the Pioneers were Drew Weddle, 126, two match wins including one by pin; Gabe Hartman, 138, four wins coming by two major decisions, one sudden victory and one pin; Bayler Poston, 160, two wins including a win by pin; Jackson Kreifel, 182, four wins, two of which came by pin with one by major decision and one by decision; and Dane Lyons, 195, one win by pin.
