Col. Derek Thomson receives Quilt of Valor at retirement ceremony

Nebraska City native Col. Derek Thomson, center, held his retirement ceremony from the U.S. Army at the Nebraska City Veterans Memorial Building on Saturday, Nov. 12. Col. Thomson was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry in June 1995 upon his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. In his 27-year career, he was stationed in Washington, Alaska, Georgia, and North Carolina, and he was deployed to Iraq during Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn in Iraq. During the ceremony, he received a Quilt of Valor from the Blue Star Mothers, Chapter No. 1 of Nebraska City.
