While waiting for paint to dry on a downtown project in 2012, Jim Kuhn began wondering what previous businesses had occupied buildings along Central Avenue. ‘The rest, as they say, is history...Main Street history, to be exact. Kuhn and other curious history lovers formed the Main Street Historians to gather and preserve information about the Nebraska City business community. The group celebrated its 10th anniversary with a gathering at the Morton- James Public Library on Thursday, Oct. 20. Some of the resources the Historians gathered were on display, including Dorris Sackles’ postcard collection, Sanborn fire insurance maps, and photos Jim Kuhn took of the 2012 downtown businesses when the project began. Kuhn said one of the first challenges the Main Street Historians had to overcome was the renaming of Nebraska City’s streets and the renumbering of its addresses in the 1890s. He said the group adopted the motto, “To the best of our knowledge,” as the project progressed because they occasionally heard from descendants of owners of short-lived businesses in downtown locations.
