West Nile, the key is prevention

One late summer day, fresh out of residency and seeing patients for the first time as a full-fledged family physician, I examined a young man who had a fever, fatigue, and a bad headache. Considering the time of year, influenza was low on the list of possibilities, and COVID-19 did not yet exist. After a physical exam and listening to his story, I ordered some tests, which resulted in a diagnosis of West Nile virus.

What kids can do in the face of bullying

Many adults may recall being bullied or witnessing bullying when they were in school. Despite that, it's important that adults, including parents and educators, not see bullying as an inevitable part of growing up. The effects of bullying can be severe, affecting those involved - including the bullied, the bullies and those who merely witness bullying - long after their school days have ended.

Geneva M. Wurtele

Geneva M. Wurtele, age 97 of Nebraska City passed away on Saturday; July 30, 2022 at her home. She was born on July 8, 1925 at Lake Odessa, MI; the daughter of Donald and Hazel (Ansbaugh) Allerding. When Geneva was only two years old, her mom passed away and she was raised by her grandparents Milo and Ellie Ansbaugh. She attended school and graduated from the Woodland High School, Woodland, MI with the Class of 1943.

Open Class Entry Day at the Fair

Wednesday morning, July 27, was the time for competitors in the 149th Otoe County Fair’s Open Class events to bring their entries to the fairgrounds. Evelyn Boyd of Nebraska City had entries in several categories including antiques, needlework, and flowers. Her daughter said, “This is Mom’s day. We block it out on the calendar and come to the fair to help bring in her entries.”
