UNO commencement The University of Nebraska, Omaha, conferred degrees on 1,851 students this May, including 1,420 undergraduate degree recipients, 416 master’s degress recipients, and 15 doctoral degree recipients. Students who received academic honors are so indicated.

Grilling is a summertime tradition, but health-conscious grillmasters may want to marinate their meats before cooking them over an open flame. Heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) are compounds that can form when meats are cooked over an open flame. HAAs are suspected carcinogens, but a 2008 study published in the Journal of Food Science found that, with a few exceptions, spice-containing marinades inhibited the formation of heterocyclic amines, thus providing reduced exposure to some of the carcinogens formed during grilling.

It Helps to Share Your Story

With the storm approaching, my wife texted me after work to come home right away. Within minutes, after I left the clinic, she called me again to tell me NOT to come home and to seek shelter immediately. At first, I thought I could make it home, but then the wall of wind hit, and a tree fell onto the road in front of me. I turned around and another tree blocked the way. Then it got so dark. It was disorienting and I turned on my windshield wipers using the fluid to try to clear the dust and mud off my windshield. That did not help. Thankfully, I made it safely to a friend’s house.

60th Anniversary

A 60th wedding anniversary card shower is planned for Ron and Linda Holland at 2444 Steamwagon Road, Nebraska City, NE 68410. Ron and Linda were married on June 9, 1962, in Talmage, and have lived in the Nebraska City vicinity all their married life. They have four children: James (home with the Lord), David and wife Sherri, Mike and wife Kelly and Kris and husband Mike. The couple has seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Horseradish and women’s heart health

Women who love horseradish may be getting more than a little extra kick when adding the condiment to their favorite foods or even their brunch-time Bloody Marys. Though it may not be a typical veggie, horseradish is a cruciferous vegetable. That's good news for women horseradish lovers, as researchers at the University of Western Australia's School of Medical and Health Sciences found that women who ate more cruciferous vegetables had healthier carotid arteries than those who ate less vegetables.
