Members of the Apple Corps barbershop chorus prepare to sing "The Star Spangled Banner" as the flag is raised to being the annual Memorial Day observance at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City. Carl Christiansen, Post Commander of American Legion Post 8 in Nebraska City, was the master of ceremonies. The Rev. Michael Schmidt of the First Christian Church offered prayers during the service, and the guest speaker was William Lawrence, District 12 Commander for the American Legion. Lawrence served in both the United States Air Force and the United States Marine Corps, and he is an active member of the American Legion Post in Weeping Water. An honor guard from the Nebraska City American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts fired a three-shot volley to conclude the cemetery service, which was followed by observances at the Riverview Marina and at the Otoe County War Memorial at the Otoe County Courthouse. During the cemetery service, the Apple Corps also performed "Mansions of the Lord" and "God Bless America."Photo by Julie Davis
